Finalist 2020: Powerfoyle

Infinite energy, durability and freedom. Powerfoyle is the solar cell solution that revolutionizes consumer electronics by using artificial photosynthesis to charge itself in both indoor and outdoor light.

Ditch the cords and not having to worry about your technology gadgets being discharged – while saving the planet. That’s the idea behind Powerfoyle, Exeger’s pioneering energy-generating material, which converts indoor and outdoor lighting into clean energy. Karin Carlström, Brand and Communications Manager at Exeger, says that it is not a traditional solar cell.

– The traditional image of a solar cell is something sitting on the roof or a window in a calculator with glass panels and silver lines. Powerfoyle has no silver lines or delicate glass surface, making it a natural part of the product and almost invisible. Our solar cell has so many uses that the only limit is the imagination. You can basically use it anywhere where electricity is needed, she says.

The first among the consumer products to use the unique solar cell material for charging is a pair of headphones from JBL that will be launched in October. And a collaboration to develop a smart helmet together with POC is being developed at a rapid pace for launch in the autumn.

Technical material with artificial photosynthesis

Behind Powerfoyle lies 12 years of research. Exeger’s innovation includes nanomaterials that create energy from light, inspired by the photosynthesis that gives life to all plants in nature. The more the consumer uses Powerfoyle, the more it helps to restore the carbon balance on the planet – while providing energy for its products. The material is flexible and can be printed in free forms to adapt to the product. Today it comes in black, but soon colors will also be an option.

– It is Exeger’s invention of a completely new nanomaterial that enables Powerfoyle to do things solar cells have not been able to do before, says Marcus von Euler, Chief Design Officer at Exeger.

Makes consumer electronics sustainable

Powerfoyle not only simplifies life for the consumer, but also creates an opportunity for product companies to take a first step towards more long-term sustainable solutions.

– Consumer electronics is not an industry that is known for being sustainable. With Powerfoyle, all suppliers get a small claim to fame and can really work for a sustainable environment and future, says Karin Carlström.

Marcus von Euler believes that the high-tech IoT society is slowed down by expensive and unsustainable charging of batteries that need to be replaced. It is not sustainable to change several billion batteries every two or three years.

– We are designing a future completely free of cables, with clean energy and without aesthetic compromises. It’s a cool feeling to be one of the first in the world to hold something that will revolutionize the future in a way that helps us help the planet and ourselves, he says.
